North Carolina is one of the most energy intensive states and, because of historically low energy prices, it is also one of the most energy inefficient. By 2030, North Carolina will add 4 million more residents who will increase the state’s energy needs, pushing up energy prices and making renewable energy a more attractive option compared with conventional energy choices. North Carolina was first in the southeast to pass a Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (REPS), requiring energy providers to use renewable energy. North Carolina though will need an energy supply mix of both conventional and renewable energy as well as energy efficient policies to meet the state’s future economic growth.
